Simple Sisterlock Styles To Keep Your Hair Healthy

Simple Sisterlock Styles To Keep Your Hair Healthy

Keeping Your Sisterlocks Healthy

Healthy hair should always be the number one goal in our haircare routines. However, it is easy to unintentionally prioritize look over health when styling for special occasions and everyday life.

We don’t have to sacrifice looking nice for healthy locs. We just have to know which sisterlocks styles are best for safeguarding the integrity and health of our hair.

Sisterlocks are excellent at providing you with low-maintenance, versatile options. But it's up to you to keep them healthy to avoid thinning and breakage.

In this post, we will debunk the myth that “beauty is pain.” Beauty can be pain-free and support the health of your growing sisterlocks.

I have picked out some of my go-to styles for healthy locs. Here are the three main criteria we use to determine simple and healthy styles for sisterlocks:

  • Low tension—it doesn’t pull on the locs or hair strands too harshly

  • Minimal styling products and tools required

  • It’s easy to achieve for lock-wearers of all levels.

Are you ready?

Try Twisting Your Sisterlocks

Most commonly referred to as “two-strand twists,” this style is a great long-term style that can be done as a “protective” style for sister lock-wearers. Protective in that once the style is done, it can be worn for 3-6 weeks with little to no maintenance. Reducing the need/urge to re-style frequently.

Two-strand and three-strand twists are easily achieved by making small sections of locks, dividing them into two or three parts, and twisting them together in a downward motion. Each twist can be secured with rubber bands, and/or beads.

Some people opt to wrap the end of one or two of the locs in the twist around the twist to secure the ends. Do what works best for your hair. If using rubber bands, soak them in oil to reduce the probability of snagging or cutting through your locs. Be sure to wear a satin bonnet or silk scarf at night to keep the hair hydrated and neat.

This style also acts as the preparation for another healthy loc style—a Twist-out.

It's Time For A Twist-Out

A twist-out is the curly style that comes as a result of unraveling twists that have set in your locs for a minimum of one to two days or as long as 3-6 weeks. If taken out carefully, the twists leave the hair in a curly or wavy state that is elegant and stylish for up to two or three weeks. This style should be preserved with a bonnet or silk scarf at night.

For a frizz-free sisterlock twist-out, use a little bit of mousse to set your two-strand or three-strand twists when installing them. Also, use a bit of oil on your hands when unraveling them.

Sisterlocks With Mini Plaits/Braids:

Loosely installed plaits or braids can provide another neat and low-tension loc style. It is achieved by dividing your locs into small sections and then dividing those sections into three small parts, plaiting/braiding downward, and securing with a loc or oik-soaked rubber band.

The number of locs you have and the density of your hair will impact how many plaits/braids you have and how they sit on your head. However, this is a great style for sister lock-wearers with short to medium-length hair that is harder to maneuver into other types of styles. This style can be worn for 3-6 weeks with little to no maintenance but is more commonly worn for up to 3 weeks.

Much like twists, this style is also a precursor to another healthy loc style, a braid out. If you plan to do a braid-out use mousse to set your braids.

Give Your Sisterlocks A Braid-Out:

A Braid-Out is the crimped/ wavy style that results from wearing your locs braided or plaited for as little as 1-2 days or up to 3-6 weeks. If taken out carefully, the braids leave the hair in a wavy pattern that is fresh and stylish for up to two or three weeks.

For a frizz-free sisterlock braid-out, use a little bit of mousse to set your braids when installing them, and put a small amount of light oil on your hands to unravel them. This style should be preserved with a bonnet or silk scarf at night.

Two Jumbo Twists:

This style is for the long-locked girlies!  An easy low-tension look for everyday life is two jumbo twists. Achieved by separating your hair into two large sections,  dividing each section into two parts twisting it downward, and then securing it with a loc or an oil-soaked rubberband.

This style is easy and versatile as it can be subsequently pinned or wrapped around the head to make a crown twist for a more upscale look/ dressier occasion.

A Low Tension Low Bun/Ponytail:

A low-tension, low bun or ponytail can be an easy style for those with medium (neck) to long locs.

For those with longer hair, this look can be achieved by gently gathering the locs toward the nape of the neck and loosely securing them with either a hair tie or a loc, and then wrapping the locs around themselves and securing them with a loc or hair tie again.

For medium lengths, I’d suggest using a headband/open-ended hair tie, and gently smoothing the locs backward toward the nape of the neck until you have a neat ponytail.

Half Up Half Down

Whether your Sisterlocks are short, medium, or long, a half-up, half-down style looks stellar. Achieved by neatly parting the hair in the middle of the head going across, you gather the top of the hair with a hair tie or loc depending on your length, and form a ponytail on the top middle of the head. This leaves the back loose.

This style should be taken down at night and redone in the morning to avoid the constant tension created by the ponytail over time. It can be easily achieved in minutes and is fitting for most occasions. It can also be used as a base style for a top knot half-down style by simply pinning or wrapping the ponytail into a bun at the top middle of the head.

Other Sisterlocks Hairsytling Tips

Maintaining the health of your sisterlocks should always be your primary concern, even when styling for special occasions. The good news is you don't have to sacrifice style for health. Focus on low-tension styles that minimize pulling on your scalp and locs, such as two-strand twists, mini braids, or loose buns positioned at the nape of your neck.

These protective styles can be worn for 3-6 weeks with minimal manipulation, giving your hair a much-needed break from frequent restyling.

For twist-outs and braid-outs, apply a small amount of mousse when installing, and use light oil on your hands when unraveling to minimize frizz. Always protect your sisterlocks at night with a satin bonnet or silk scarf to retain moisture and maintain your style.

Remember to take down styles like ponytails before bed to avoid constant tension that could lead to thinning or breakage over time. By following these simple practices, you'll ensure your sisterlocks remain healthy, strong, and beautiful for years to come.

Last Word on Simple Sisterlock Styles

These simple styles are a great foundation for your healthy hairstyle. Remember, when choosing hair-healthy styles you want to stick with low-tension, minimal products. If you're struggling to do the style yourself, consider hooking up with a loctician or hairstylist to help. Not only are these styles beautiful but can keep your hair healthy as it matures and grows.
