Sisterlocks Extensions Pros and Cons: Should You Get Them?

Can you use sisterlocks extensions to add length and versatility to your hair?

If you’ve recently locked your hair using the sister locs technique or itching for a new style, you’ve probably come across sister loc extensions.

Sisterlocks are versatile dreadlocks installed using a patented 2, 3, or 4-point interlocking technique.

The technique was developed by Dr. JoAnne Cornwell in 1993, to neatly preserve your hair in a uniform grid pattern. Sisterlocks requires a specially created loc tool and tries to avoid waxes, gels, and heavy styling products.

They look like micro braids and women love them thanks to their versatility, lightweight feel, and ease of maintenance. At the same time, sisterlocks are a journey of love and consistency. They can take multiple hours to install. And you need at least 1-2 years before your hair grows into the long, beautiful locs you envisioned.

Sometimes, you want to get to the front of the line, so using sisterlocks extensions is the way to go. But is there any value to adding extensions to your existing sisterlocks? What about if you want to use them as braids?

Both are an option.

Let’s break down the pros and cons so you can decide if sisterlocs extensions are for you.

What are Sisterlocks Extensions?

If you’ve had braids before you know they come in different types and styles. You can get the hair in loose bundles and your hairstylist will braid them into a style of your choice.

You can also buy hair in particular styles, often called extensions. Sisterlock extensions are human or synthetic hair extensions you can buy and install in your hair. They are typically 0.4-0.6 cm in width, interlocked to mimic the appearance of natural, fully mature sisterlocks.

You can add extensions to your current sisterlocks or braid them into your natural hair from the root. It usually takes a few hours to install them, and with the proper care, sisterlocks extensions last for several months.

Pros of Sisterlocks Extensions

Added Length and Fullness

If you’re transitioning from natural hair or relaxed hair to sisterlocks, you may feel self-conscious about the length of your hair. You’ll probably start your sisterlocks on hair only a few inches long. Sisterlocks extensions give instant length to transition into dreadlocks with length and fullness.

Perhaps you’re dissatisfied with the rate at which your hair grows or some areas are thinner than others. Sisterlocks extensions fill those areas, so you can grow out your locks or your natural hair while still wearing it with confidence.

Styling Versatility

One of the biggest challenges on my sisterlocks journey was a lack of styling options. During that first 1-2 years of growth, there is not much I can do as my length is limited. Extensions automatically expand your styling options. You can do buns, wear some up, some down, and even try a ponytail. If you’re looking for a new style, preparing for an event, or want to bring in the New Year in style, they are great!

If you want versatility, sisterlocks extensions can come in different colors. Natural extensions can take color, so you can dye your hair and extensions to switch up your look.

Protection for Natural Hair

If you’ve been worried about too much manipulation, extensions can give your hair a much-needed break. Sisterlocks go through different stages of growth. Extensions allow you to experience these growth phases without touching your hair excessively.

Extensions are also used as a protective style to help those recovering from hair damage do so without any issues.

Time-Saving Benefits

Extensions are great time-saving hairstyles. Fully mature sisterlocks are great as they require minimal styling. If you’re a busy mom, career woman, or business owner (or all three), sometimes you want the convenience of going about your day with minimal effort required on your hair. With extensions, you get longer-lasting styles and more convenience.

Cons of Sisterlocks Extensions

Installation Time and Cost

Adding sisterlocks extensions means you must spend additional time and money installing them by a hairdresser or loctician. The installation process can take anywhere from 6-12 hours, depending on the amount of extensions being added and the skill level of your consultant.

Extensions add $300-$800 to your hair budget depending on the type and quality of hair used, the amount of locs installed, and your hairdresser/consultant’s experience level.

Weight and Tension Concerns

You have to account for the additional weight and tension placed on your natural hair and scalp with extensions. The extra weight can cause uncomfortable pulling on your scalp, especially during the first few weeks. Your existing Sisterlocks may experience stress at the base, potentially leading to breakage. Other potential concerns include traction alopecia (hair loss due to constant pulling), weak bonds, and even possible headaches.

These concerns are magnified if you have fine hair or a sensitive scalp, or if your natural sisterlocks are still in the early stages of establishment.

Maintenance Challenges

Sisterlocks extensions require specialized maintenance that can be time-consuming and technically challenging. Your washing routine changes as you have to not disrupt your braids. Drying time also increases and is equally important so your hair does not trap moisture, leading to possible mildew.

On your sisterlocks journey, you need to have periodic retightening sessions done. It can take longer when you take your extensions into consideration. Your hair will need a little more attention when combining your natural locks and extensions to prevent matting and damage.

Limitations and Restrictions

Extensions place certain restrictions on your activities and lifestyle. If you’re a swimmer, take extra precautions in the pool to prevent chlorine or salt water from damaging your extensions. Sweat from gym sessions and humidity from changes in the weather impact your extension’s longevity. You’ll need to make adjustments during these activities, like protecting or covering your hair, for long-term health.

Understanding the pros and cons of sisterlocks extension can help you decide if it’s right for you.

Where to Source Your Sisterlocks Extensions

Not sure where to source your sisterlocks extensions?

If you’re doing them yourself or a friend is helping you out, you can source synthetic or natural hair at your local hair store.

You can also talk to your loctician or hairstylist for recommendations.

Hairstylists will give the option of bringing your own hair or they will provide the extensions for an additional cost.

When choosing extensions, look for a texture that matches your natural hair or the style you're aiming for. Ensure the color blends seamlessly with your hair and spend on a brand known for producing high-quality extensions.

Should You Get Sisterlocks Extensions?

The decision to get Sisterlocks extensions depends on your hair goals, lifestyle, and budget.

If you're seeking immediate length, styling versatility, or a protective option while growing your natural sisterlocks, extensions can be an excellent solution. Go for it.

However, be prepared for the additional cost, maintenance requirements, and potential scalp tension.

Ideally, extensions should only last a couple of months before you take them out or replace them.

If you want them to last longer, protect your extensions while sleeping with a satin bonnet, and minimize washing to once every 1-2 weeks.

Keep your scalp moisturized with light oils, and still schedule regular maintenance appointments with your consultant if you already have sisterlocks.

Always consider consulting with a certified Sisterlocks technician who specializes in extensions before making your decision. They can evaluate your existing locks or natural hair and recommend the best approach to get that length while still protecting your hair or sisterlocks.
